1929 GEARY-DESIGNED 50' BRIDGE DECK CRUISER

Randy says, "MARY ELLEN DAVIS is a 50-foot (12-foot beam) bridge deck cruiser, designed by Ted Geary and built at Lake Union Dry Dock in Seattle in 1929.  She was presented to Mary Ellen Weyerhauser as a wedding present from her husband Frederick Davis, the accountant for the Weyerhauser company at the time; hence, Mary Ellen Davis.  The Davis's cruised 'MED' all over Puget Sound for many years until failing health made this impossible.  MED was donated to a charity and bought by a local business owner around 1994.  This new owner did not take to the boating life and MED languished in the freshwater marina where I now live, until about a year ago.  I had been keeping my eye on MED for several years, keeping her pumped out.  A requirement for liability insurance had the owner threatening to dismantle this beautiful boat, so in a leap of faith and passion, I acquired MED from the owner.  I hauled her out of the water one year ago and found rot damage much more extensive than I had counted on, too expensive and extensive to do the repairs in Seattle.  I put her on a truck and got her to a private yard, under a covered shed in Port Townsend, Washington.  I spent around 500 hours, working on weekends, to begin restoring Mary Ellen.  MED has what is referred to locally as "Lake Union Ring Rot".  Having stayed only in the fresh water for too long, all the planks along the water line, at least on the starboard side, have become rotten, as well as many of the frames.  The rot traveled into the keel, so the shaft log also needs replacing.  This boat has always been moored under cover though, so above the water line, she is still beautiful.  The Gray Marine 6-71 Detroit Diesel runs like new.  Given enough time and resources, this boat is totally restorable, and is worthy of it.  I am afraid, though, that the project is just too big for me to handle with my limited resources."
